Dear Brookhaven families,
Tomorrow, October 20th,  is our “Lunch with a Loved One” for students in grades 1-6.  Parents or families of students in grades 1-6 may come during their student’s lunch time and have lunch with their child and visit the Bookaneer Book Fair in the MPR.  Primary lunch is from 11:50-12:35 and upper grade lunch is from 12:05-12:45.  Students are not to be pulled out of class to visit the Book Fair.

As a reminder, our “Lunch with a Loved One” is for lunch only and shopping only. Parents and/or family members are not to be on the playground playing with students.  Thank you for helping us keep students safe.

This year we are also doing “Early Bear Hours” on Monday, 10/24 and Tuesday, 10/25 from 7:15-7:45 am for all Brookhaven students to shop for books . We will not be having Breakfast with Books this year.  The Bookaneer Book Fair will also be open during our Fall Festival on Thurs, 10/27, from 5-8 pm.

Kindergarten and Preppy K Late Bears are able to shop on early on Tuesday, 10/25 from 9:00-9:30 am and late on Wednesday, 10/26 from 12:50-2:00 pm.  As a reminder, students will not be permitted to leave class to shop for books.

A Fantastic First Week!

Dear Bear Families,

What a successful first week!  I am beyond thrilled to be a part of our Brookhaven community and I’m looking forward to a great year together!  I want to first share with you how wonderful, welcoming, polite and inclusive your children are!  We have an amazing school culture, of course you know this, and I couldn’t be more honored to become a part of it!

This week opened very smoothly as students met their teachers and we are getting into the swing of the school year.  I want to thank parents for following our policy of saying goodbye to your child(ren) at the gate each morning now when the bell rings.  By doing this, our students are able to walk to their lines and begin their day all while we are able to ensure campus safety.  We also have older students watching out for our younger bears, along with our supervising staff, to point them in the right direction if needed.  Thank you parents!!

Some highlights from the week:

  • Students learned about expected positive behaviors at our PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention & Supports) stations on Tuesday and Wednesday
  • Students earned Bear Hugs for demonstrating those positive behaviors
  • Pete the Cat and Brownie Bear in PK and K were lost, and then found, as our PK and K students learned about our school and how to find the office, library, computer lab and playgrounds 🙂
  • New students were welcomed by teachers, staff and returning students as they began their year as Brookhaven Bears
  • Students and families were extremely welcoming and polite as they introduced themselves to me and shared conversation
  • Teachers collaborated with one another to ensure students will have our “Best Year Yet”
  • Our PTA and parent volunteers worked selflessly to support the opening of school

Back to School Night for grades 1-6 will be this coming Thursday night, September 8th, from 6:30-8:00 pm.  Please join us in the MPR at 6:30 pm for a staff introduction, a welcome from the Principal, and a brief PTA meeting where the PTA budget will be submitted for approval.  Please remember that this is an evening for adults only, no students.  The teachers will give two identical sessions; one at 7:00 pm and one at 7:30 pm.  We look forward to seeing you all there!

Have a wonderful holiday weekend!

Go Bears!

First Day of School ~ Monday, August 29th!

Hello Brookhaven Bears, this is your Principal, Mrs. Lucas.

I am very excited about our first day of school tomorrow! The bell for school to begin rings at 7:50 am. Parents, you are invited to walk with your students to their class lines, grades 1-3 on the primary blacktop and grades 4-6 on the upper grade blacktop, to meet their teacher. Class lists are posted now outside the front office. Check out our Brookhaven Elementary Facebook page to see our teachers!

Please do not park in any staff spots or red zones. PK and Kindergarten parents must park and walk their child to class. I invite you all to attend my brief Principal Meet and Greet beginning at approximately 8:00 am in the MPR. I also want to remind parents to mark your calendars for our Back to School Night which is next Thursday, September 8th.

We are very excited about our first day tomorrow! I can’t wait to meet you all! Bears, get to bed early, eat a good breakfast and I’ll see you in the morning.

All parents who are volunteering or have an appointment with the teacher must enter through the office, sign in, and get a visitor’s badge. Once children enter the school campus, they are under the protection and supervision of our school staff. For the safety of all children, the only adults inside the gates will be school staff or adults with a volunteer badge.

The price for a school lunch is $2.75. Milk is available for $0.50 and juice for $0.75. Parents may send cash or a check to school or setup a lunch account online for their child through our district website. More information will be sent home in the First Day packet.

Brookhaven Named Gold Ribbon Recipient

Gold Ribbon

Brookhaven was pleased to receive the state’s highest honor this week – The California Gold Ribbon Award. The state superintendent announced Gold Ribbon recipients on April 13, 2016 in a press release. The award showcases Brookhaven’s success in providing a supportive and positive learning environment for our students and reflects the dedication, commitment, and talent of the Brookhaven staff as well as the supportive community that we serve. Brookhaven began the application process during November and focused on the school’s goals of providing interventions and positive peer interaction through our peer mentoring model and our Positive Behavior Supports and Intervention (PBIS ) program. The California Gold Ribbon School Award was developed last year to replace the California Distinguished School Award during their transition in assessments and a new accountability system. We thank you for your continued support of Brookhaven and helping it be the special place that it is.
