Spring 2017 Bear Paw Newsletter

March, 2017

Happy Spring Brookhaven Families!

Time is certainly flying by and it’s hard to believe we are into the third and final trimester of this school year! With that in mind, I’d like to share a few important reminders, informational items and things to keep in mind as we head into the end of the year. Please take a few minutes to read this entire newsletter. As always, please continue to follow Brookhaven Elementary on our Facebook page and check our school website for Principal Blog Posts. On our school website, you can view our school calendar as well as browse the tabs at the top of the page to find all things Brookhaven for your reference. Keep in mind that adding and updating our site is an on-going process. If there are things you would find helpful and would like to be included as a reference on our website, please send me your suggestions via my school email.

Open House:

Our annual Open House is Thursday, April 6, from 6:30 – 8:00 PM! PTA will be hold their General Association Meeting at 6:30 PM in our MPR and then all classrooms will be open from 7:00 – 8:00 PM. Our Happy Camper Book Fair will be open during Open House as well. We invite you to join us for this fun, celebratory evening! Parking will be limited so please consider carpooling or, better yet, walk with your kids to school for the evening! Looking forward to seeing you all!

Spring Dress Code Change:

I am making a few slight, but appropriate changes, to our dress code for spring. I mentioned these changes at our Trimester 2 awards assemblies, therefore students in grades 1-6 have all heard about these changes. As a reminder, all students should wear CLOSE-TOED shoes that make navigating the playground and participating in PE possible and safe. I also shared with students that if they wonder if an outfit or article of clothing is appropriate for school, it’s likely not and they should not wear it to school I told them that they should come to school “ready to learn” and not as though they are headed to the beach.

As you shop for spring clothing, please keep these new guidelines in mind:

  • Spaghetti strap shirts and dresses will not be allowed. Low-cut necklines as well as midriff tops will not be permitted. These styles of tops are a possible distraction in our school setting.
  • Short-shorts will not be allowed. This applies mainly to our girls, as the boys styles and options at the stores are longer. I told our students that a good rule of thumb is mid-thigh or fingertip length, when arms are hanging down at their sides, is a good measure.

Thank you for your cooperation and support of these changes. I also encouraged students to wear sunscreen daily and welcomed them to bring a hat to wear at recess and lunch as the weather continues to warm up.

State Testing for Grades 3-6:

All students in grades three through six will participate in the annual state (SBA/CAASPP) testing during the month of May. This is a computer adaptive test that students will take either in their classroom on a Chromebook or in the computer lab. Students will be tested on their grade level standards in English Language Arts and Math. Students in fifth grade will also take the CAST, which is the Computer Adaptive Science Test. This a pilot year for the science test only. More information regarding testing will be sent home to parents shortly.

Students should attend school every day that they are healthy. When students miss school, they lose out on valuable instruction from their teacher. As we head into the end of the year, it’s often tempting for families to want to miss school to participate in family outings or trips. I strongly encourage families to reserve special trips, vacations and events for weekends, holidays and the upcoming summer break.

  • Spring Break is April 10 – 14
  • Summer Break begins June 16

Parking Lot Safety:

Our parking lot has become a bit more congested lately and it seems that drop off and pick-up routines need a refresher.

Please remember that the lot directly in front of the school is for school staff only, as well as any families with a handicap placard. Parents should NOT drive through the front lot to drop-off or pick-up students. Parents SHOULD use our valet line, park in the lot off Bastanchury or in the surrounding neighborhood. Please do NOT park in any red zones or block our busses in when they are picking up/dropping off students. Please do not make u-turns or turn left out of our parking lot during these times as well. Students and families should NOT walk through the parking lot but instead walk on our sidewalks to enter and exit campus. It is helpful if parents do not use their cell phones while driving through our parking lot so that they can give their full attention to student safety. If you have questions about our drop-off or pick-up procedures, please send me an email or call the office to ask. Thank you for continuing to keep our students safe!

New Registration:

If you live within our attendance boundaries and have new neighbors or neighbors with kids who might be starting Preppy K or Kindergarten in this fall, please encourage them to stop in the office now to pick up a registration packet. Thank you!

2017-18 Calendar:

Please see our school website for the 2017-18 school year calendar. School begins on Tuesday, August 29th. As you are planning your summer vacation, you will want to keep this important date in mind.

Parents and families, I cannot thank you enough for your partnership, community, support and love for Brookhaven! I am thoroughly enjoying getting to know our students, families and staff more and more with each passing day! It truly is hard for me to believe that our year is beginning to wind down! With that said, we do have quite a bit to do before the end of the year and I am looking forward to all that is yet to come!

As we finish our year, please remind your students to continue to do their best each day, “Be the Example,” use kind words and actions every day and arrive on-time, prepared for school!

A Fantastic First Week!

Dear Bear Families,

What a successful first week!  I am beyond thrilled to be a part of our Brookhaven community and I’m looking forward to a great year together!  I want to first share with you how wonderful, welcoming, polite and inclusive your children are!  We have an amazing school culture, of course you know this, and I couldn’t be more honored to become a part of it!

This week opened very smoothly as students met their teachers and we are getting into the swing of the school year.  I want to thank parents for following our policy of saying goodbye to your child(ren) at the gate each morning now when the bell rings.  By doing this, our students are able to walk to their lines and begin their day all while we are able to ensure campus safety.  We also have older students watching out for our younger bears, along with our supervising staff, to point them in the right direction if needed.  Thank you parents!!

Some highlights from the week:

  • Students learned about expected positive behaviors at our PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention & Supports) stations on Tuesday and Wednesday
  • Students earned Bear Hugs for demonstrating those positive behaviors
  • Pete the Cat and Brownie Bear in PK and K were lost, and then found, as our PK and K students learned about our school and how to find the office, library, computer lab and playgrounds 🙂
  • New students were welcomed by teachers, staff and returning students as they began their year as Brookhaven Bears
  • Students and families were extremely welcoming and polite as they introduced themselves to me and shared conversation
  • Teachers collaborated with one another to ensure students will have our “Best Year Yet”
  • Our PTA and parent volunteers worked selflessly to support the opening of school

Back to School Night for grades 1-6 will be this coming Thursday night, September 8th, from 6:30-8:00 pm.  Please join us in the MPR at 6:30 pm for a staff introduction, a welcome from the Principal, and a brief PTA meeting where the PTA budget will be submitted for approval.  Please remember that this is an evening for adults only, no students.  The teachers will give two identical sessions; one at 7:00 pm and one at 7:30 pm.  We look forward to seeing you all there!

Have a wonderful holiday weekend!
